The Best AI Features Shouldn’t Feel Like AI
Most teams start AI the same way – “We should add chat.”
That’s reasonable. Chat is the default shape of AI right now. It’s also the fastest way to ship something that looks impressive in a demo and annoys users in real life.
Because users don’t want “AI.”
They want the boring thing it’s supposed to do. They want fewer clicks, fewer mistakes, fewer follow-ups, and less mental load.
And when you get it right, nobody says, “Wow, great AI.”
They just finish their work faster.
Invisibility is the goal of AI.
The Problem
Right now, there’s a race to make AI visible.
Companies slap AI labels on everything. They add chat interfaces where forms worked fine. They build features that showcase the technology instead of solving problems.
This is AI theatre. It impresses investors and generates LinkedIn likes. But it does very little for users.
A user needs to find a product. The company replaced their search bar with a “conversational AI assistant.” Now the user has to type a question, wait for a response, read through a paragraph of text, and click a link. The old search bar returned results in 200 milliseconds.
The new feature is technically more sophisticated. It’s also worse. AI theatre prioritises demonstration over utility. It makes the technology the star and users the audience.
Real product work does the opposite. The user is the star, while the technology fades into the background.
What AI should actually feel like
The best AI features operate in the background. They make existing workflows faster, more accurate, or more personalised. Users experience the outcome. They don’t experience the mechanism.
Smart defaults. A form pre-fills based on patterns in your previous submissions. You didn’t ask for it. You just notice the form takes 30 seconds instead of an irritating 3 minutes of repeating your details.
Intelligent sorting. Search results appear in an order that matches what you wanted. The ranking algorithm uses semantic understanding. You just see relevant results first.
Automated validation. The system catches an error before you submit. It understood the context of your input and flagged an inconsistency. You see a helpful message. You don’t know the model that generated it.
Predictive suggestions. As you type, the interface offers completions that make sense. Not generic autocomplete. Suggestions based on your history, your context, and your likely intent.
None of these features announces itself. They work and that’s the point.
Question – Why do companies want to build AI that screams when it should be silent?
Three reasons.
Differentiation pressure. Marketing teams want something to talk about. “Our AI assistant helps you find products” sounds like a feature. “We improved search relevance by 40%” sounds like a footnote. The visible feature wins the homepage slot even when the invisible improvement delivers more value.
Demonstration bias. Demos favour features you can see. A chatbot conversation looks impressive in a sales deck. Backend intelligence improvements don’t demo well. Internal teams optimise for what they can show stakeholders.
Technology fascination. Engineers and product teams get excited about AI capabilities. That excitement leaks into the product. Features get built because the technology is interesting, not because users asked for them.
The result is products cluttered with AI features that create friction rather than remove it.
The Integration Principle
As a rule, AI should integrate and not interrupt.
An interruption forces the user to change what they’re doing. It demands attention. It requires the user to learn something new, wait for something to happen, or navigate an unfamiliar interface.
An integration enhances what the user is already doing. It fits the existing flow. It reduces steps instead of adding them.
Most chatbots are interruptions. You’re trying to complete a task. A window pops up. Now you’re having a conversation with a robot instead of doing what you came to do.
Most recommendation engines are integrations. You’re browsing products. Relevant suggestions appear alongside what you’re looking at. You don’t change your behaviour. The experience just gets better.
The principle applies across every AI feature decision:

Integration requires more design work. You have to understand the existing user journey intimately. You have to find the exact moments where intelligence adds value without adding friction.
Interruption is easier to build. That’s why there’s so much of it.
A Practical Framework to Implement AI
How do you actually build AI features that disappear into the product?
Start with these questions.
What existing workflow could be faster?
Look at what users already do. Find the slow, manual and repetitive steps. Those are candidates for AI enhancement. Don’t add a new feature. Improve the existing one.
What decision could be easier?
Users make decisions constantly. What to click. What to buy. What to prioritise. Many of these decisions involve processing information that AI handles well. Summarisation, comparison and pattern recognition. Find decisions where AI can reduce cognitive load without taking control away from the user.
What error could be prevented?
Mistakes happen when users lack context, miss information, or make assumptions. AI can catch inconsistencies, flag anomalies, and surface relevant details at the right moment. Error prevention is invisible by nature. Users experience the absence of problems.
What wait could be eliminated?
Anywhere users wait for human processing is a candidate for AI acceleration. Examples include document review, routing requests and initial assessments. The goal is to reduce the delay between request and response.
For each candidate feature, apply three tests:
The speed test. Can the AI feature operate fast enough to feel seamless? If not, can you restructure the interaction so the delay doesn’t create friction?
The accuracy test. Is the AI reliable enough for users to trust? If not, can you add verification steps without creating more work than you’re saving?
The value test. Does the improvement matter to users? Will they notice? Will it change their behaviour? If not, the feature isn’t worth building regardless of how clever it is.

The technology should disappear while the value remains.
